Santa Rosa, like other cities in California, is underfunded in fire and mental health services. If this measure fails, these services will be further strained and impacted. Increasing sales tax is undeniably a regressive and short-sighted funding mechanism. We wish that public safety services were adequately funded. However, the community has long lived under an unfair tax system that favors the wealthy and large corporations, so we support a fair and just tax system that allows the next generation, regardless of class or background, to enjoy quality public school education and public services. This measure raises funds from the community for public safety, with funds directly allocated to actual safety and community needs. Ensuring the community has the resources it needs is the priority at this time, and this sales tax is an unavoidable choice.
