Regardless of who you are or where you come from, a place to call home is the foundation of life. When people have housing, parents can find jobs, children can go to school, health and sanitation improve, communities become stronger, and society progresses. Unfortunately, California's housing market is currently dominated by real estate titans and corporate landlords who spend millions on elections to buy votes. They profit from predatory strategies, while average working people struggle to afford rent or mortgages. Minority communities, working families, seniors, and people with disabilities are suffering. We urge you to vote NO on Proposition D. San Francisco is already saturated with market-rate housing, and developers and corporate landlords continue to build more. Coupled with the rising cost of living, more and more minority working families are being displaced. Proposition D redefines affordable housing to be more expensive, with studios costing nearly $4,000 per month still considered "affordable" when the market rate should be $3,095 per month. The proposition also does not require the construction of two- or three-bedroom units, meaning developers will not build the types of housing that San Francisco families need most. To solve homelessness and put San Francisco on the right track, we need to build more truly affordable housing. Proposition D only makes it easier for greedy developers to profit from units that average working families cannot afford.
