Regardless of who they are or where they come from, a place to call home is the foundation of life. With a place to call home, parents are happy to work, children are happy to learn, health and hygiene improve, community spirit is strengthened, and society moves towards stable development. Unfortunately, the California housing market is now dominated by real estate magnates and institutional landlords who invest heavily in elections to win votes. They profit handsomely through predatory strategies, while ordinary working-class Californians struggle to cope with high rents or mortgages. Minority groups, working families, the elderly, and people with disabilities are suffering. What's more, under current laws, it is extremely difficult for cities to acquire land and build affordable housing. This proposal will help remove obstacles. We must support South San Francisco's visionary approach to land acquisition and zoning changes, and this proposal is a model for other Bay Area cities.
