Kate Harrison has served on Berkeley City Council since 2017 and in that time has established a climate equity fund that helps low-income residents transition to zero-carbon housing. She also authored first-in-the-nation legislation phasing out natural gas in new construction. As a student at Berkeley, she organized for rent control and tenant protections and worked to pass California’s first just cause eviction protection. As working-class communities of color in Berkeley get displaced because of the rising cost of living, we need legislators like Harrison who will protect and expand affordable housing, hold developers and landlords accountable, and ensure that workers’ rights are protected and all people of Berkeley are able to live with dignity. Bay Rising Action is endorsing Kate Harrison because she brings an equity lens to the issues facing Berkeley and understands that the only way to solve community issues is through community input.
